Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick has confirmed that the Government will provide council tax relief to vulnerable people and households through its £500m Hardship Fund. The fund, which was announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in the Budget, will be administered by local authorities. Councils will be able to use the fund to reduce council tax bills, and to provide further discretionary support to vulnerable people, such as through local welfare schemes. Mr Jenrick commented: “Providing the necessary financial support to people and families is critical at this difficult time when many people will be concerned about changes to their income. That’s why we’re giving local councils an additional £500m, to ensure help is available for the most vulnerable people in our society who are struggling to pay their council tax bills.”
