Dungeness Lifeboat was launched to assist a 23ft motor cruiser with engine failure, 5 miles north-east of the station on Monday evening. Coastguards requested the Launch of ‘The Morrell’, Dungeness’s state of the art Lifeboat just before 6 pm. The boat had been on travelling from Brighton to Southend with three people on board.
Once on scene Duty Coxswain Roger Gillett, put one of the Lifeboat crew on board the stricken boat to rig a towing bridle and the vessel was then towed to Dover Harbour. Coxswain Gillett said; “although the casualty’s electronic navigation was broken down, we were pleased to see that they were using the traditional paper navigation charts to plot their position for us to locate them. Nowadays too many people rely on electronic navigation aids only”
